About
What I look for in art of any period is imaginative energy, radiance, equilibrium, composure, color, light, vitality, poise, bouyancy, a transcendent ability to soar above life and not be subjugated by it.

Artist Statement
I grew up artistically in a school that focused on the elements of design coupled with innovation. My mentor, Pat Adams, stressed careful seeing and the need for keen awareness of color, line and design. She encouraged improvisation and freedom guided by a clear sense of the past and a good grasp of the visual basics.
I value free expression within chosen limits, how the paint interacts with the edges of the canvas or paper, how the colors relate to one another, interesting balance of small and large, dark and light, a variety of lines and textures. When I paint I improvise. This requires being in the moment. Finally, I strive to create art that is satisfying up close as well as from a distance.
Often I enter the work with a series in mind. The paintings go through various stages, something mysterious eventually emerges. I listen and move the piece toward that mystery.
